About Us The Austin Academy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping adults improve their lives through education. Adult Basic Education, GED preparation, Job Readiness and Computer Literacy is the focus of our programs to help participants gain the education they need to increase their employment prospects or to successfully move into higher education. The Austin Academy was founded in 1994 by Lynore Brown. Ms Brown led the organization for 16 years and helped make the Austin Academy a premier place for improving job prospects to participants so that they could support themselves and their families. She also started the TEA Dropout Recovery Pilot Program grant to help students meet the requirements for college. Amy Loar took over as Executive Director in October 2010 and hopes to emulate the successes garnered in the Academy’s first 16 years. The Austin Academy has grown from serving 50 clients in our first year to providing service and referrals to more than 850 clients this past year. Currently the Austin Academy provides Adult Basic Education, GED to Work and GED to college programs. Please see the Programs page for more information. |
The Austin Academy has been fortunate to have been awarded major grants to support our work and has received funding from the Texas Work Force Commission, the Office of the Attorney General’s Other Victim Assistance Grant, the City of Austin, Travis County and Travis County Victims Fund, the Housing Authority of the City of Austin, the Community Action Network of Austin/Travis County, the Austin Community Foundation, the Austin Women’s Foundation, Applied Materials, Dell, IBM, and the LCRA. In October of 2007, The Austin Academy received the KDK Harman Foundation GED Award of Excellence for Outstanding Achievements in Breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Adult Education. The 2010 Graduating Class included 1 ABE certified student, 39 GED attainers and 76 Job Readiness Program graduates. |
